Wenger to outgun Mourinho in battle for £10M defender
Jose Mourinho's big spending has been the story of the summer transfer window, with Arsene Wenger watching from the sidelines. It could be that the Arsenal manager has been waiting patiently to make a late swoop however, as news emerges about a potential hijacking of one of Manchester United's transfer targets by the Gooners.
ESPN FC have reported that Arsenal have made an approach for Southampton centre-back Jose Fonte, who they previously claimed was in talks with Jose Mourinho to agree a deal to make a switch to United from current club Southampton.
Wenger is desperate to bring in a central defender following losing Gabriel Paulista and Per Mertersacker to long term injuries. The asking price for Fonte is said to be around £10 million who has two years left on his current deal with Southampton.
Euro 2016 winner Fonte is understood to favour a move to join his Portuguese compatriot Mourinho and we would expect United to win in a bidding war with Arsenal. However, after conceding four goals against Liverpool at the weekend Wenger could be willing to go the extra mile to patch up his leaking defence.
