Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has suggested that Kieran Trippier’s injury problems this season are due to his involvement with England during the 2018 World Cup.
Trippier played a starring role for the Three Lions during the World Cup in Russia as he helped Gareth Southgate’s charges to defy the odds and reach the semi-final of the tournament.
Trippier’s heroics in Russia also included a goal during England’s 2-1 defeat against Croatia during the semi-final. The right-back put his country ahead during early on before second-half goals from Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic consigned the Three Lions to elimination.
Trippier had to miss three games before limping off while playing against Southampton on Wednesday. He had to leave the field during the 87th minute of the game against the Saints as the Lilywhites went on to win 3-1.
Pochettino has suggested that Trippier should not have been selected for England’s third-place playoff defeat against Belgium.
As quoted by talkSport, the Argentine said: "To play after three days the game against Belgium affected him a little bit and now he is suffering that situation,"
"The situation today, the pitch is not in a very good in that area, and the groin suffers more when the pitch is different.
"We need to care a lot for him, protect that problem. But it will be a long period for him suffering this type of problem.
"That is an area that is difficult to sort out, the groin, but I don't believe that will be a big thing.
"He need to accept that situation and live sometimes with some pain and play."
