Ashton discusses speculation about Leeds manager – ‘You would be worried’

Dean Ashton believes that Leeds United fans will be worried about speculation concerning the future of Marcelo Bielsa.

According to Peruvian media outlet La Republica, Bielsa is a contender to take over as manager of Peru.

The Argentine was appointed as the Leeds head coach last summer, and his current contract at Elland Road runs until the end of next season.

Former Norwich City and West Ham United striker Ashton, now a media pundit, has given his take on speculation on the future of Bielsa.

He told Football League World: “I’m pretty sure Leeds fans will be worried if any job came up with him being linked to it.

“Certainly if you’re looking at that part of the world, you would be worried he would want to go back over that side of the world.

“But, I think there’s a hell of a lot of football still to be played before Bielsa makes a decision on his future.

“I think Leeds fans would be absolutely gutted if he was to leave, certainly if they don’t make it to the Premier League.”

Bielsa has been a massive success at Leeds, and he has made himself hugely popular among the fans at Elland Road.

The Whites may have narrowly failed to clinch automatic promotion to the Premier League, but the West Yorkshire outfit are in the Championship playoffs.

Leeds will take on Derby County in the semi-finals, and if they can get the better of the Rams, then they will face either Aston Villa or West Bromwich Albion in the final for a place in the Premier League next season.

Of course, fans of the club will be worried that if the team fail to get out of the Championship, Bielsa may not have the appetite to try to do it all over again.

However, if Leeds do find themselves in the Premier League next season, then the fans will hope that the Argentine stays in charge of the team, given what he has achieved with the current group of players.
