Done Deal: Former Arsenal striker signs new one-year contract with Chelsea

Chelsea and France international Olivier Giroud has signed a new contract with the Stamford Bridge outfit today. The 32-year-old former Arsenal striker new deal to extends his stay with the club until the end of 2019-20 season.

Giroud said as quoted via BBC:

“I am very happy to sign a new contract. I really wanted to stay at least one more year.

“I have felt a part of the team, the family, since the beginning and hopefully there will be more trophies to come.”

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia added:

“We are very pleased that Olivier will be a Chelsea player for another season. Since joining us 18 months ago, he has at times had to be patient and wait for opportunities, but has still been able to make a positive contribution to the team.

“Whether it is his unselfish link-up play or his 10 Europa League goals this season, he has been a crucial member of the squad and we hope he will be able to pick up a second Chelsea winner’s medal in Baku later this month to accompany last season’s FA Cup win.”

The France World Cup winner had been out of contract this summer, which meant he could be on the verge of joining another club on a free move.

He joined Chelsea from London rivals Arsenal in January 2018 and has since gone on to net 17 goals across 62 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Giroud, who was part of France’s team that won the 2018 World Cup in Russia, his an integral part of Blues’ run to the Europa League final, netting 10 goals from 13 outings, as well as with three assists to his name for Chelsea.

According to club’s official website, Giroud is the 2018/19 tournament’s joint top scorer and is the first Blues player ever to reach double figures for goals in a single season of European football.

The Frenchman is also an integral part of the then Maurizio Sarri side that won the FA Cup last season for Chelsea.
