Two midfielders reportedly surplus to requirements at Tottenham Hotspur

BBC Sports News correspondent David Ornstein has suggested on BBC Radio Five Live that Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is open to offers for Eric Dier and Victor Wanyama.

Ornstein said:

“Victor Wanyama is pretty much surplus to requirements at Spurs, possibly even Eric Dier, too.”

The Kenya international has struggled with fitness issues this season with Dier also spending time on the sidelines.

Tottenham finished in the top four of the Premier League and have reached the final of the Champions League this season, but Wanyama has not played a key role.

Signed from Premier League rivals Southampton in the summer of 2016, Wanyama has struggled with injuries during his time at Tottenham, and even he is fit, he is not guaranteed a place in Mauricio Pochettino’s starting lineup.

The 27-year-old made four starts and nine substitute appearances in the Premier League for Spurs this season, scoring one goal in the process.

The former Celtic star has also made four starts and two substitute appearances in the Champions League for Tottenham this campaign.

As for Dier, it is more surprising that Pochettino reportedly considers the England international surplus to requirements.

The 25-year-old has done well since he moved to Spurs from Sporting Lisbon back in the summer of 2014, and he has been an asset given that he is able to play as a central defender or as a defensive midfielder.
