Former Man United defender believes Solskjaer a better bet than Pochettino

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker believes his former side should give Ole Gunnar Solskjaer time and money in January to strengthen the core of his of team capable of competing with the very best.

The 46-year-old Norwegian boss was 7/1 second favourite to be the next Premier League manager to be shown the door a week again, but with guarding his side to impressive victories in tough fixtures at home to Tottenham Hotspur and away to champions Manchester City showed enough evidence that the Red Devils are returning to form and flair which they have been missing for so long.

Bookies favourite to take over the dugout

Mauricio Pochettino is currently bookies favourite to take over the dugout at Old Trafford and is priced at 8/11 but Parker, who won two Premier League titles with Manchester United, has voiced his reservations at the Argentinian replacing Solskjaer regardless of results in the future.

Speaking at a bonuscodebets.co.uk event, the former Manchester United and England defender said:

“I hope he is given time to go and spend in January to try and see what he can do. I don’t think it’s fair to go through what he did in the summer with rumours around his job, then go through everything he has in the last few weeks, and not give him that opportunity.

“Any new manager who comes in is going to want that anyway, and when he comes in he will want his own stable of players that he can get in.

“Ole is there because he loves the club and everything he does is for the club. A new manager will not be as much about the club but more about themselves.”

Mauricio Pochettino was sacked by Spurs hierarchy six months after leading the North London club to the Champions League final and was replaced by Solskjaer’s predecessor at Old Trafford Jose Mourinho.

Parker, however, does not see the South-American gaffer, who has been linked with host of managerial jobs with the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, as a good fit for Manchester United because of the set-up off the field.

Parker added:

“I think the structure of the club would not suit Pochettino.

“I can’t see why he would go there. The club needs a football person to take control of the issues in terms of getting players in and the recruitment, someone who will take the blame and admit if they get it wrong.”

“At Tottenham things were stable, he took what he had and turned them into something better and got them to a Champions League final. Can he do that with this Manchester United team? No, I really don’t think so.”

Manchester United returns to action tomorrow night – Thursday night – against AZ Alkmaar for their final Europa League group stage which follows their return to Premier League actions as they play host to Everton at the Old Trafford.
