Some Celtic supporters have been left fuming as referee Kevin Clancy has been named as the official for the club’s upcoming Old Firm derby clash.
Celtic and Rangers have met each other twice in all outings this season. Both sides first game this season saw them finished 2-0 in Celtic’s favour as Jonny Hayes scored, with Odsonne Edouard also have scored to help the Hoops win the derby.
Their second meeting of this season was played early this month and it was the League Cup final at Hampden Park. Celtic rode on Christopher Jullien goal to secure their 19th League Cup title triumph in history.
Despite the club’s impressive records against Rangers, however, some Celtic fans aren’t happy that Clancy has been named the official for the upcoming Old Firm derby clash at the weekend.
As things stand, Neil Lennon’s side are the top of the Premiership table with five points ahead of second-placed Rangers. The Hoops increased their lead at the top of the table last weekend as they beat Aberdeen 2-1, thanks to goals from Ryan Christie and Odsonne Edouard.
Rangers, however, play host to fifth-placed Kilmarnock on Thursday and they will look to cut down the gap to two points once again.
As for Clancy, who has been named the official for this weekend Old Firm Derby, is currently 36 and has refereed a total of 36 games in all competitions this season. Nine of the Scot’s 36 games have come in the Premiership wherein three of those nine games have been Celtic games.
Celtic have won two and drawn one of the three games Clancy has refereed in this season. Rangers, on the other hand, Steven Gerrard’s men have had Clancy refereed two of their games this season and theyโve won both of them by a 1-0 margin.
Clancy has dished out 91 yellow cards this season according to Transfermarkt, with three straight reds and two second yellow cards and officiating a heated rivalry as the Old Firm, one could only imagine what number of cards would be given out by Clancy.
However, it would be unfair to criticise the referee even before the game starts. As we all know, the Old Firm derby is one of the most heated rivalry in football and emotions can spray to all directions.
And according to stats from Transfermarkt, Clancy’s has refereed 35 Celtic games โ the most for any club. They have lost two, drawing five. As for Rangers, Clancy has refereed 27 Gers games.

A cowardly ref who shys away from making any real decisions. Great

I love how both sets of fans already hate this ๐
Letโs be honest, it doesnโt matter who it is, the majority of officials in this country are shambolic. No a straw between them all.

Seriously?
One of the biggest games in years and they give it to that absolute balloon. He perpetually battles with willie collum for the title of worst referee in the world. Only one way that game will finish….— Craig Clements (@naefish1000) December 23, 2019
Same Kevin Clancy who got demoted after his ridiculous display in the Hibs v Celtic game earlier this season?
