Southampton leading the race to sign Schalke midfielder

According to the Daily Express, Southampton are winning the chase for Schalke player Weston McKennie which could be a boost for Tottenham Hotspur.

The 21-year-old has been spectacular for the Miners since joining the club in 2017, racking up 91 appearances in all competitions and scoring five goals.

The report further says that the Saints are not the only club in pursuit of the midfielder, rather Everton, Leicester City, Newcastle United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers are also interested in his services.

It is understood that the United States international is rated at £26million but his current employers are aware they may have to take £18million for his services.

This transfer move could provide the boost for Tottenham to complete a deal of their own.

Jose Mourinho’s side want to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and McKennie is regarded as the Danish footballer’s replacement. So if the Saints become successful to sign the 21-year-old, then that could provide the necessary boost for Spurs to complete their own deal.

At such a tender age, the American player has already attained quite a reputation in the Bundesliga which says a great deal about his football skills.

He could be an ideal signing for Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side who will be looking to finish in the upper reaches of the Premier League table next season.
