Leeds United have completed the signing of Wigan Athletic player Joe Gelhardt who is their first new hire since returning to England’s top division, as per The Yorkshire Post.
The Peacocks are scouring the market to add quality to their ranks ahead of their 2020-21 Premier League campaign.
They secured promotion to the top-flight after finishing at the top of the table in the second-tier of English football.
Gelhardt is not a proven goal-scorer, but the Whites will be hoping to develop him as a good striker for the longer term.
The 18-year-old has penned a four-year contract with the Peacocks, and according to the report, the fee is thought to be around £1 million.
The youngster earned his professional debut for Wigan in August 2018 at Rotherham United, when he was only 16 years old. He has made two Championship starts for the Latics, with the striker scoring a goal in the 2-2 draw at Hull City last campaign.
The West Yorkshire side look in need of an experienced goal-scorer. They currently have only Patrick Bamford as their senior centre-forward, even though Tyler Roberts has also played in that position for them.
They signed Jean-Kevin Augustin on loan in January with the club obliged to make the deal permanent, however, the French forward failed to impress and now they are not keen to hire his services anymore.
Augustin only made three cameo appearances for Marcelo Bielsa’s side since coming to Elland Road, with no goals and assists to his name.
