Lucas Alario’s agent has claimed that Scottish champions Celtic were interested in securing the services of his client, as per The Boot Room.
The Bhoys have been scouring the transfer market for adding attacking options this summer, with Odsonne Edouard’s future at Celtic Park uncertain and Leigh Griffiths not looking fully fit.
In the end, they hired the services of Swiss footballer Albian Ajeti from West Ham. However, it looks the Scottish side made their transfer interest in Alario known at some point.
The 27-year-old footballer’s agent Pedro Aldave said to Europa Calcio that his client wants to play in a competitive league, meaning the Hoops are not an option for him.
“I had (Oscar) Cardozo at Benfica for 7 years, I have an excellent relationship with the club,” Aldave said. “Alario is a suitable profile for the Portuguese club but I don’t know if it could be satisfactory from an economic point of view. At the moment they are just rumors. The only team that has shown interest in Alario is Celtic, but he wants to play in a competitive league.”
The Argentine footballer started his career at Colon where he made 60 Argentine Primera Division appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals. He landed a move to River Plate in 2015 where he spent two seasons before joining the German side Bayer Leverkusen.
The striker has clocked up 98 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga club, smashing 36 goals and creating 12 assists. He has also earned seven caps for the Argentina national team, with three goals to his name.
Despite smashing 12 goals in 36 matches, Lucas was not a regular last campaign and found himself in and out of Peter Bosz’s team.
Therefore, he now looks to be searching for a new challenge at a different club. The Bhoys appeared ready to offer him that chance, but unfortunately, the player himself regards a move to Celtic beneath him.
