Former Manchester United player Wayne Rooney has claimed that Liverpool hiring the services of Thiago Alcantara would be a better signing than Lionel Messi coming to Manchester City, as per Talksport.
In a surprising interview, the experienced footballer also said that he doesn’t expect any side to come between the Reds and the Citizens for the next Premier League title race.
The 34-year-old player is currently the captain for Championship club Derby County which he joined in August 2019, even though he had two years left on his contract with D.C. United.
When Rooney was asked to give his opinion about the 2020-21 league title race, he picked Jurgen Klopp’s side to win again, if they sign Thiago.
He said:
“I think it’s City or Liverpool.
“Man United have a lot of potential in the players they’ve got but I still think they are a year away.
“Chelsea with the new signings will possibly need a year to get everyone on the same songsheet.
“So I do think it’s between City and Liverpool. And if Liverpool sign Thiago from Bayern Munich, I think the title is done.
“That is a better signing than Messi going to Manchester City.”
Given the English footballer spent most of his career at Everton and Manchester United, these comments may have surprised many of the Reds fans.
However, his saying that Alcantara’s signing would be better than Messi joining Pep Guardiola’s side looks somewhat exaggerated.
Many regard Messi as one of the best footballers in the current footballing world, for he smashed an incredible 634 career goals in 731 appearances in all competitions for Barcelona.
The 33-year-old has won a record six Ballon d’Or awards while he has also bagged six European Golden Shoes. During his time at Camp Nou so far, he has claimed a club-record 33 trophies which include ten league titles and four Champions League trophies.
