Bayern Munich rewarded Serge Gnabry by handing him Number 7 Shirt

Bayern Munich have rewarded Serge Gnabry’s amazing form by handing him the iconic Number 7 Shirt, as per 90MIN.

The 25-year-old joined the Bavarians from Werder Bremen in 2018 but has seen great improvement in his game since coming from a loan spell at Hoffenheim. He was in an explosive form last campaign when he clocked up 46 appearances in all competitions, smashing 23 goals and creating 14 assists to help his side to a famous treble.

The iconic shirt number remained unassigned last season, with French footballer Franck Ribery wearing it between 2007 and his leaving for Fiorentina last summer.

“I’m really looking forward to wearing this shirt number in the future,” He told the club’s official website. “Franck has always thrilled the fans – that motivates me all the more.”

Bayern will be hoping the 25-year-old follows in the footsteps of Ribery, but the player has a big bar to aim for. Franck claimed nine league titles in his time at the Allianz Arena, though he won only one Champions League trophy, which his heir-apparent has managed to achieve too.

Gnabry smashed nine goals in ten European appearances last campaign as his side won the coveted European trophy for the sixth time.

Besides the 37-year-old Frenchman, the No.7 shirt has also been assigned to the Reds current boss Hansi Flick, who played for the German club between 1985-1990, while Chairman Karl-Heinz has also worn it.

The Bundesliga side giving the Germany international a new number shows that he is expected to play a big role for the club going forward, as they hope to do well both in Germany and Europe in the next seasons.
