Luka Modric backs Mourinho to win trophies at Tottenham

Luka Modric has backed Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho to deliver trophies at Tottenham, with the midfielder saying his former boss wins everywhere, as per Goal.com.

The 57-year-old is currently preparing for the 2020-21 season, having taken the hot-seat at Spurs to succeed Mauricio Pochettino last November.

The London side were struggling in the bottom half of the table when Mourinho first arrived, however, he gradually brought improvements in the team during the second half of the campaign and managed to secure a sixth-place finish.

Following the resumption of football in June, the English side claimed five victories, drawn three and lost just once in the Premier League.

The former Real Madrid boss has a great reputation when it comes to winning trophies, with the experienced manager winning three Premier League titles at Chelsea and registering Champions League trophy both with Porto and Inter.

He secured two trophies even at Manchester United, winning the 2017 Carabao Cup after beating Southampton in the final, and claiming the Europa League the same year by defeating Ajax.

Modric is confident his former boss will achieve success at Tottenham who haven’t won a trophy for a long time.

The Croatian footballer has hailed Jose who convinced him to join Los Blancos from Spurs in 2013, while giving an insight into the manager’s approach.

He told The Times:

“Yes, definitely.

“I have a special affection for him, for everything he meant for me. Tottenham did a great thing to appoint him as a manager because he is a proven winner.

“In Italy, England and Spain he won things and he knows how to win. I am hoping he manages to do the same thing with Spurs.

“It’s a great thing for Tottenham to be able to bring in someone like him.

“He wins everywhere. Even when people say, ‘Ah, he didn’t win in Manchester [United]’. He won the Europa League and other cups [League Cup in the 2016-17 season] because of his quality.

“He knows how to transport his energy to the players. If I had to say one thing [that he does differently to other managers] it is how he prepares for games.

“It’s something unbelievable, he gives you everything you need to know about the teams, where to make damage and exploit them.”
